Coral Ark
Since 1985 the percentage coverage of coral reefs around the globe has declined from 28.0% to just 13.8% in 2012, equating to a loss of over 50% of initial coral cover from when records began. This is predominantly due to anthropogenic affects and climate change. In order to ensure the long term survival of these intricate ecosystems, it has become necessary to implement safe guards that will ensure their long term survival. MYA Maritech is at the forefront of protecting global reefs with our Coral Ark Project in partnership with MYA Mariculture.
Invasive Crayfish
Invasive Signal Crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) were introduced by the UK Government in the 1970’s with the intention of creating a new fishery to improve exports, however, these hardy crayfish easily escaped fishery facilities and are now widespread across the UK. Large, adaptive and carriers of the crayfish plague, our native White-claw Crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) are under threat of extinction. MYA Maritech is actively working to fight back against the invasion in conjunction with NGO’s and Government Bodies as well as helping to restore vital habitat for our native crayfish to thrive.
Going Green
Climate change is real and it has an impact on us all. MYA Maritech is actively working with our parent company MYA Mariculture to deliver our big green objectives and achieve carbon neutrality by 2025. From packaging and stationary, our vehicle fleet and facilities we’re working hard to reduce our footprint and the footprint of our clients.
European Tree Frogs
The European Tree frog has been largely absent from the UK for the last 500 years! MYA Maritech are working to help bring them back by working with NGO’s to restore vital marshland habitat as well maintaining a genetically viable captive population at one of our facilities in the UK with the hope that one day we can reintroduce these awesome amphibians back where they belong.
Plastic Cleanup
Every year 12.7 million tonnes of plastic are discarded into the ocean and inevitably some of this washes back onto land. Whilst MYA Maritech is actively working with our partners and NGO’s to promote sustainable use and the recapture of ocean plastic, MYA Maritech performs regular beach cleans across the UK, carried out by our team to help turn the tide on plastic.
